I completed my undergraduate and graduate studies at Western University under the supervision of Dr. Melvyn Goodale, and conducted at postdoctoral fellowship in the Vision Sciences Lab at Harvard University under the supervision of Dr. Yaoda Xu. Broadly speaking, I am interested in visual perception and cognition, with specific interests in scene perception, object-ensemble perception (the perception of large collections of multiple objects), and how mid-level visual features (e.g., shape, texture, material properties) contribute to the cognitive and neural mechanisms mediating these types of perceptual processes. My lab uses behavioural psychophysical and neuroimaging techniques to investigate these questions. Fun fact about myself: I have always been terrible at writing fun facts about myself.

Following a B.A. in Psychology, Physiology, and Philosophy at the University of Oxford, I was a Ph.D. student at the Department of Experimental Psychology, University of Cambridge working with Professors Trevor Robbins and Adrian Owen on the role of the human frontal lobes in memory encoding and retrieval. I then undertook a post-doctoral position with Prof. Kim Graham at the MRC Cognition & Brain Sciences Unit, Cambridge, UK, where I became interested in long-term memory and the medial temporal lobes. In 2006, I moved to the Department of Experimental Psychology, University of Oxford on a Royal Society Relocation Fellowship, and became a Wellcome Trust Research Career Development Fellow in 2008. In 2011, I took up a faculty position at the Department of Psychology, University of Toronto, Scarborough campus. Outside of science, I love spending time with my wife and children, and making music

I received my Psychologie Diplom (equivalent to an M.A.) from the University of Hamburg and my PhD from the University of Tübingen. After a postdoc at U of T, York University, and Western University, I started my position at UTSC in 2003. In my spare time, I enjoy listening to and playing music, traveling, and trying new foods.

I am the director of the Decision Neuroscience Laboratory, and an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto. I received degrees in psychology from Harvard (B.A.) and Stanford (Ph.D.), and spent several years as a post-doctoral scholar studying neuroeconomics at the California Institute of Technology. My research focuses on understanding why people make the decisions they do, why they sometimes regret those decisions, and how we can help them make better choices for themselves and others. I love the deep philosophical implications of neuroscience and psychology, and also the pretty brain pictures.

My research focuses on neurocomputational aspects of visual recognition with the aid of neuroimaging (fMRI, EEG), behavioral psychophysics and computational modeling in healthy adults and in patients. Of particular interest is the development of ’mind reading’ neurotechnology. I completed a PhD in Cognitive Science at Brown University, followed by a postdoctoral  fellowship with the Department of Psychology and the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition at Carnegie Mellon University. In my spare time I am an acroyoga practitioner and instructor.

I am a UTSC alumni and have completed a Specialist in Psychology. As lab manager , I am responsible for taking care of administrative tasks, in order to ensure an efficient lab environment. My interests cover a wide scope of topics from abnormal psychology to multisensory integration in the context of aging and rehabilitation as a research assistant for Dr. Zakzanis' Clinical Psychology lab at the UTSC and Dr. Campos' Multisensory Integration in Virtual Environments lab at the UHN-TRI Campus, respectively. Aside from academics and work, I enjoy dancing, painting and traveling.  Fun fact about myself:  I have a twin sister!
